Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly.
Syncope can be classified into four categories: reflex mediated, cardiac, orthostatic, and cerebrovascular.
Dehydration is the most common cause of fainting in children. When the body doesnt get enough fluid intake, the blood pressure can drop, which can cause inadequate blood flow to the brain. In many cases, as a first step, pediatricians will recommend that children who have fainted simply drink more.
Types of Syncope Vasovagal syncope (also called neurocardiogenic syncope). Situational syncope (a type of vasovagal syncope). Postural or orthostatic syncope (also called postural hypotension). Cardiac syncope. Neurologic syncope. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Syncope with an unknown cause.
Vasovagal syncope is the most common form of reflex syncope and is mediated by the vasovagal reflex. The most common triggers in elderly people are prolonged standing or sitting and use of vasodilator drugs. The classic prodromal features (pallor, diaphoresis, nausea, and warmth) are less prominent in elderly people.
vasovagal syncope, also known as simple faint, or neural syncope, is a loss of consciousness, associated with lower blood pressure, triggered by an emotional event. vasodepressor syncope is syncope mediated by vasodilation.
Types of fainting Vasovagal syncope. Vasovagal syncope involves the vagus nerve. Carotid sinus syncope. This type happens when the carotid artery in the neck is constricted, usually after turning your head to one side or wearing a collar thats too tight. Situational syncope.
Dizziness and fainting in elderly adults is caused by a drop in blood pressure and loss of blood flow to the brain. This is called vasovagal syncope and is the most common cause of syncope in elderly adults.
