Between 1940 and 1960, the amount of mail doubled in The United States. Thats largely because companies began using computers to send automated mailings. Soon, the flood of mail sent by banks, advertisers, and other businesses was overwhelming postal workers. The Postal Service needed a solution. In 1963, the Zone Improvement Plan divided the country into ten regions and assigned five digits increasing in specificity, from region, to large sorting centers, to smaller post offices. Where previously mail workers had to figure out which post office went with which address, now the zip code provided that information for them. The government promoted the new system with a cartoon character, Mr. ZIP, and a song from a zip-code lovin band called The Swingin Six. You know youve gotta have a zip code on the envelope, a zip code so you wont just have to hope. A zip code morning, noon and night, and everything will be alright. And it worked by 1969, 83% of Americans were using zip codes,

If you have an address or partial address, you can find the zip code through USPS Zip Code Lookup, a tool on the U.S. postal services website. You can also search by city or state, or find all cities that are part of a particular zip code.
Due to an increase in population or to the improve postal operations, the US Postal Service will occasionally add a new ZIP Code or change ZIP Code boundaries.
If you have six numbers then you are not in the USA and your six numbers are not relevant. A Zip Code cannot have six numbers.
So, USPS created 9-digit ZIP Codes to ensure fast and accurate mailings. They indicate the actual path the mail should travel and usually they narrow down to somewhere between ten to twenty homes.
ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.
The USPS updates their zip codes quarterly.
If prompted for your ZIP code, just enter the three digits of your postal code plus two zeros. So for example, if your postal code is A2B 3C4, the 5-digit number you should enter is 23400.
A credit card ZIP code is part of the geographical identifier associated with a credit cards billing address. This will be the postal or ZIP code you provided when you applied for the card, unless you have since moved to a new address and updated your billing information.
ANSWER: The two codes are essentially the same in their purpose, but the term Zip code is mainly used in the USA; Postal Code is commonly used in other countries.
The four extra numbers are added after a hyphen to complete the ZIP+4. So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level.
