A lienholder is a person or institution who holds the lien, or legal claim, to your property until the terms of your loan are satisfied. A lien release is when the lender confirms the loan is paid in full and removes the lien. Once released, the car is yours, free and clear!
To Remove Lienholder: Submit lien clearance letter from the lienholder indicating that the lien has been paid in full; or. Submit lien contract stating that the lien has been paid in full; Submit a court order directing our office to issue the duplicate title without the lien or lienholders name.

In order to remove the lien from the BMV records, you must take the title to any County Clerk of Courts Title Office and apply for a title. The County Clerk of Courts Title Office will issue you a new paper title.
Submit the following documents when you apply for a title without the standard ownership documents: You can submit a bill of sale, receipt or canceled a check. Submit a written appraisal of the vehicles current wholesale value for a licensed vehicle dealer. Pay the application fee.
Duplicate Title If you are applying in person: Application(s) for Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (form BMV 3774) If you are applying by mail: Complete and mail an Application(s) for Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (form BMV 3774) to the County Clerk of Courts Title Office that issued the title.
Please allow two to three weeks processing time for Duplicate/Lost Title applications and six weeks processing time for New/Corrected/Transfer Title applications.
You must submit your application, along with a fee of $50 and any pertinent documentation, to the Secretary of States Office.
Adding/Removing Owner(s) To add another owner to the title of a vehicle or watercraft, you must apply for a new title by completing an Application for Certificate of Title For A Vehicle - State Form 205, or an Application for Certificate of Watercraft Title State Form 38529, and returning the form to a branch.
