Linux export Syntax The syntax for the export command is: export [-f] [-n] [name[=value] ] Running the command without any options outputs all the exported variables and functions: The command runs successfully unless you pass an invalid option or an invalid variable [name] .
The basic syntax for the export command is straightforward: # export [options] [name[=value] ] This basic syntax allows you to set environment variables that will be inherited by child processes initiated by the current shell.
To make a permanent environment variable persist after a reboot, add it to the default profile. All users on the system, including the service accounts, load this default profile. All global profile settings are located under the/etc/profile.
You can set an environment variable permanently by placing an export command in your Bash shells startup script ~/.bashrc (or ~/.bashprofile , or ~/.profile ) of your home directory; or /etc/profile for system-wide operations. Take note that files beginning with dot ( . ) is hidden by default.
Linux export Options Using the -p option: The -p option lists all variable names used in the current shell. Using the -f option: The -f option exports the variable names as functions. Using the -n option: The -n option removes the specified variables and functions from the list of exported variables.
echo is a command for printing text and variables to stdout (or redirect). export lists the current exported variables in the shell.
Firstly, to set the environment variables, we used the xargs command on the . env file contents to set the key-value pairs as arguments to the export command. Subsequently, the export command sets the environment variables we need.
Use printenv to List Linux Environment Variables. The printenv command displays the current environment variables. You can use printenv to list all your current Linux environment variables by running the command without any options or parameters. The output should display your shells current working directory.
