After youve applied to the EU Settlement Scheme, the Home Office will email you a letter to tell you what status theyve given you. This is known as your decision letter.
As a local authority, you can email EUSettlementScheme@homeoffice.gov.uk with specific queries or comments relating to your work and the EU Settlement Scheme.
If you get settled status, any children born in the UK while youre living here will automatically be British citizens. If you get pre-settled status, any children born in the UK will be eligible for pre-settled status. They will only be a British citizen if they qualify for it through their other parent.
Settled status will let you stay in the UK for as long as you like. You can usually apply for citizenship once youve had settled status for 12 months. Check what youll need to do to apply.
You can stay in the UK for a further 5 years from the date on your Home Office decision letter. You can apply for settled status after youve lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for 5 years in a row (known as continuous residence).
To get settled status, you only need evidence for 6 months out of every 12 months for 5 years in a row. It doesnt have to be the last 5 years. You can provide evidence for a different 5-year period - as long as you havent lived outside the UK for 5 years in a row since then.
The good news is that as far as Settlement Agreements are concerned, it has been common for many years now for the parties not to sign a hard copy of the document, and instead to complete the agreement by email using scanned copies. We have been doing this for a long time and it generally goes very smoothly.
To be eligible for settled status you will need to prove that you have had at least five years continuous residence in the UK. However, if you had permanent residence before applying for settled status then you will not need to prove this. The deadline to apply for settled status is the 31st of June 2021.
