Stippling is a drawing technique in which areas of light and shadow are created using nothing but dots. The basic idea is simple: For darker areas, you apply a greater number of dots and keep them close together. Then for progressively lighter areas, use fewer dots and space them farther apart.

Most dot painters prefer to use acrylic paints for their artwork. The brand you choose doesn't matter; it's the consistency of the paint that is important. Some paint may be thick and leave a point at the top of the dot. Others may be too flat.
Stippling is the creation of a pattern simulating varying degrees of solidity or shading by using small dots. Such a pattern may occur in nature and these effects are frequently emulated by artists.
Stippling Tools and Materials There are three main tools that artists use for stippling: a fine ballpoint pen, a fine tipped paint brush, and a graphite pencil.
pointillism, also called divisionism and chromo-luminarism, in painting, the practice of applying small strokes or dots of colour to a surface so that from a distance they visually blend together.
Tips for the perfect dot The paint consistency needs to be fluid. If it is too thick then it will not create the perfect dot. Tip the container of paint and if it pours out in 1 second it is a good consistency. If you paint is too thick, then add a couple of drops of water to the acrylic paint.
Cloth made of soft fabric such as gauze and cotton is also used when drawing in charcoal. By pressing down and gently rubbing on the drawing with a cloth, you can even out and adjust the tone, or create blurred effects. Similarly, variations in shades can be achieved by dusting.
