Base64 is a group of similar binary-to-text encoding schemes that represent binary data in an ASCII string format by translating it into a radix-64 representation. The term Base64 originates from a specific MIME content transfer encoding.
Both PGP and S/MIME make use of an encoding technique referred to as radix-64 conversion. This technique maps arbitrary binary input into printable character output.
As you can see, this is a very simple process and you can decode Base64 even by hand.
Decoding base64 First, you remove any padding characters from the end of the encoded string. Then, you translate each base64 character back to their six-bit binary representation. Finally, you divide the bits into byte-sized (eight-bit) chunks and translate the data back to its original format.

What is Radix 64 Encoding? Radix 64 encoding allows binary data stored in octets (i.e. bytes) to be expressed as printable characters. Radix-64 characters require the binary input to be split into blocks of 6. These numbers (which all range from 0 - 63) are then mapped onto a character set of printable characters.
To decode a Base64 encoded string, use the DecodeString() function from the encoding/base64 standard library package. This function takes an encoded string as an argument and returns a byte slice, along with the decoding error. To get the decoded string, convert the byte slice to a string.
