For read. csv(), the default quote parameter is quote=\, which means that only double quotes will be used to delimit strings, not single quotes. Because two of your sample names had apostrophes (single quotes), the read. table() function tried to include everything between those two as a single string.
comments.csv This file uses backslash ( \ ) character to escape the embedded double quotes. However, by default the default csv module uses a double quote character to escape double quote character.

Heres a way to do it without formulas or macros: Save your CSV as Excel. Select any cells that might have commas. Open to the Format menu and click on Cells. Pick the Custom format. Enter this = \@\ Click OK. Save the file as CSV.
The data value with a comma character that is part of the data is enclosed in double quotes. The double quotes that are part of the data are escaped with a double quote even though the field value is enclosed in double quotes. Note: In CSV mode, all characters are docHub.
In CSV files, quotation marks function as text qualifiers. This means that they define what text should be stored as a single value versus what distinct values that should be separated out.
CSV files use double-quote marks to delimit field values that have spaces, so a value like Santa Claus gets saved as Santa Claus to preserve the space. If a field value contains double-quotes, then the double-quotes get doubled-up so the parser can tell the difference.
In CSV files, quotation marks function as text qualifiers. This means that they define what text should be stored as a single value versus what distinct values that should be separated out.
So quote characters are used in CSV files when the text within a field also includes a comma and could be confused as being the reserved comma delimiter for the next field. Quote characters indicate the start and end of a block of text where any comma characters can be ignored.
