Types of ECDIS charts Raster Chart (RNC): RNCs are a direct copy or a scan of the paper charts. It looks identical to a paper chart as all the information shown is directly printed. Vector Chart (ENC): ENCs are computer-generated charts.
Temporary preliminary (TP) corrections Check if your ECDIS is capable / Compatible to show AIO. To check, go to AVCS in UKHO website and click on ECDIS AIO. AIO data must have been loaded into the ECDIS. Your correction software/provider must be set up to provide you AIO data every week.
Temporary and Preliminary Notices are issued by Hydrographic Offices when the information will only be valid for a short period of time or needs to be promulgated quickly and a normal chart correction would take too long to prepare and distribute. Users may individually apply TP notices to their ECDIS.
The sensors providing the data inputs to ECDIS are the following: The global positioning system (GPS and/or DGPS). The automatic identification system (AIS). The radar and automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA).
They are typically enhanced with overlays of navigation safety information, along with radar, ARPA, and AIS inputs. The main distinction between ECDIS and ECS is the former must use official government produced charts, whereas the later can use any form of digital chart.
An ECDIS functions as the hardware, while an ENC contains the dataset of relevant information for a voyage. Together, these two components create a powerful digital navigation solution. However, they bring much more to the table than eliminating paper waste and storage via basic digitization.
ENCs are updated by weekly Notices to Mariners issued by Hydrographic Offices / Regional ENC co-ordination centers ( RENC) and corrections are received on the vessel either by email or data file (AVCS DVD). The actual updating is either applied to the ECDIS chart database automatically or by the user.
The TP NMs are displayed as polygons over the ENCs on the ECDIS. The full text of the NM is included as an associated text file which can be displayed by selecting the Temporary Notice to Mariners or Preliminary Notice to Mariners feature in the ECDIS Pick Report.
Temporary Preliminary Notices Contains Notices to Mariners that temporarily affects the nautical charts or have preliminary information that is subject to further verification. The capital P or T affixed in the number of any notice denotes preliminary or temporary, respectively.
Unlike an ECDIS operating in ENC mode, RNC mode operation allows for limited alarm and warning functionality. There is a finite amount of resolution because images are digitally scanned. Vector charts may show more dense information when used to zoom in. Raster charts are limited in their functionality in this regard.
