Now lets look at the two main types of halftone screening: conventional screening and stochastic screening.
Halftone is a 20th-century printing technique where patterns of dots were used to create images. At a time when printing processes were limited, halftone was the method used to create the appearance of colors and shades.
Halftone is the reprographic technique that simulates continuous-tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size or in spacing, thus generating a gradient-like effect. Halftone can also be used to refer specifically to the image that is produced by this process.
Halftone is the reprographic technique that simulates continuous tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size, in shape or in spacing.
halftone process, in printing, a technique of breaking up an image into a series of dots so as to reproduce the full tone range of a photograph or tone art work. Breaking up is usually done by a screen inserted over the plate being exposed.
There are several different kinds of halftones, including clustered-dot, stochastic, and error diffusion. For simplicity, this discussion only covers clustered-dot halftones. Line screen frequency is a measure of the resolution of a halftone, expressed in lines per inch (lpi).
Most methods of mechanical printing can only print ink or leave blank areas on a printed substrate. The halftone process translates the different tones of a photograph into dots of various sizes (fig. 3). Note: The binary (black or white) representation of a continuous-tone image is in fact an optical.
A full-tone area is a continuously inked area over the en- tire image, whereas a halftone image area is made up of small dots (see Fig. 6). The halftone dots can have different sizes, depending on how dark or light the image should be printed.
