Scrub Seals A scrub seal is an application that is very close to a chip seal treatment where asphalt emulsion and crushed rock are placed on an asphalt pavement surface. The only difference is that the asphalt emulsion is applied to the road surface through a series of brooms placed at different angles.
A cape seal is a combination treatment consisting of a chip seal covered with either a slurry seal or microsurfacing. Once the chip seal has been placed, the road should be reopened to traffic until a full cure has been obtained before placing the slurry seal or microsurfacing.
A slurry seal is a maintenance treatment that prolongs the life of asphalt at a fraction of the cost of full pavement (structural) repair. The slurry material consists of fine, crushed aggregate (rock), asphalt, and water that cures over a few hours in hot weather.
A scrub seal is an application that is very similar to a chip seal treatment. The only difference is that the asphalt distributor pulls a broom sled that houses a series of brooms placed at different angles. These brooms guide or scrub the emulsion into cracks that ensure the road will be sealed.
The chip seal process First, asphalt is mixed with about 30% water. Immediately after spraying this asphalt, a layer of crushed gravel is applied by a spreader. Next, the gravel is compacted and embedded into the asphalt by rubber-tired rollers. The new chip-seal surface can require up to two days to cure properly.
