RTF (Rich Text Format) files arent designed to carry any computer code / macros that can be run to start a virus infection. So they would seem to be safe from virus infection. Sadly, not having macros doesnt stop hackers using RTFs maliciously. RTF documents can still be used to compromise a computer.
Why Should I Use Rich Text Format (RTF)? RTF is readable across many programs and platforms. Although many applications can import Microsoft Word DOC files, older programs may not be able to import or convert newer versions of Word. RTF is extremely easy to use. RTF does not spread viruses.
Microsoft advises disabling the opening of RTF files in Microsoft Word to avoid these attacks. Other suggested workarounds included making Word open RTF files in Protected View, reading emails in plain text and using Microsoft Office File Block to prevent the opening of RTF files in Word 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.
The major downside is file size. RTF documents are not compressed so they are much larger than the same document saved in . docx or . odt formats that automatically shrink the file.
However, having the ability to read PDF on a machine is becoming a given and the capabilities of presentation in PDF form with more consistency is far superior to RTF.
The RTF format was first used in 1987 but stopped being updated by Microsoft in 2008.
To create a hyperlink, select your Rich Text module and click the Edit button (1). Next, type in new text or select an existing portion you wish to turn into a hyperlink (2) and click the Hyperlink button (3) from the Text Format toolbar. You will then see a window to enter the link you wish to turn into a hyperlink.
One disadvantage of RTF is that it does not support all features of a word processor. For example, RTF does not support tables or images. Another disadvantage is that RTF files can be larger than other types of text files, such as plaintext files.
