Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. [ Download now: A sysadmin's guide to Bash scripting. ] Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences.
The length of a Base64-encoded string is always a multiple of 4. Only these characters are used by the encryption: “A” to “Z”, “a” to “z”, “0” to “9”, “+” and “/” The end of a string can be padded up to two times using the “=”-character (this character is allowed in the end only)
Base64 only contains A–Z , a–z , 0–9 , + , / and = . So the list of characters not to be used is: all possible characters minus the ones mentioned above. For special purposes . and _ are possible, too.
While encoding the user name and password with the Base64 algorithm typically makes them unreadable by the naked eye, they are as easily decoded as they are encoded. Security is not the intent of the encoding step.
Convert Images to Base64 Just select your JPG, PNG, GIF, Webp, or BMP picture or drag & drop it in the form below, press the Convert to Base64 button, and you'll get a base-64 string of the image. Press a button – get base64. No ads, nonsense, or garbage. Drag and drop your image here!

The base64 is a binary to a text encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format. base64 is designed to carry data stored in binary format across the channels. It takes any form of data and transforms it into a long string of plain text.
To embed images encoded with Base64, use the img element. This prevents the page from loading slowly and saves the web browser from additional HTTP requests. The 1st part is the Base64 encoded image. The 2nd part is the Base64 encoded string of the image.
How does base64 work? Base64 encoding converts every three bytes of data (three bytes is 3*8=24 bits) into four base64 characters. Which makes up a total of three bytes (24 bits). Base64 encoding will divide the binary data up to six-bit chunks and map them to a base64 character ing to the table above.
