Once the footnote text is selected, press F9. A dialogue box will open saying Word cannot undo this action. Do you want to continue? Select yes, and your cross-references will be updated! You can also update a single cross-reference by selecting it and pressing F9.
In your document, double-click the note reference mark. Word automatically scrolls to the footnote or endnote. Make the changes that you want.
To adjust the settings of your footnote, including the numbering style, when to start and stop the numbering of your notes, etc., click on the Expand icon in the Footnotes Group of the References Ribbon. You can have your footnotes and endnotes restart their numbering in each chapter.
If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on). For even more formatting options, click the Format button in the lower-left corner.

Changing the Way Footnotes Are Numbered Make sure the References tab is selected on the ribbon. Click the small downward-pointing arrow at the lower-right corner of the Footnotes group. Make sure the Footnotes radio button is selected. Change the Start At value to reflect where you want Word to start numbering.
If you are doing your edits without Track Changes being turned on, then it is possible that your footnotes dont use automatic numbering. Meaning, whoever created the footnotes actually inserted the numbers within the Custom Mark field of the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.
Go to the footer of your Word document. Click on the citation beside the footnote number to highlight it. Go to the EndNote toolbar. Click on Edit Manage Citations.
At the bottom of a page, right-click the footnote text area, click Note Options, and then click Convert. Finally, click Convert all footnotes to endnotes. To convert one footnote to an endnote: At the bottom of the page, right-click the text of a footnote, and then click Convert to Endnote.
When you want to automatically update the supra reference numbers, do this: Click your cursor anywhere inside the footnote fields. Hit Ctrl A. Hit F9.
