Although most of this will actually apply to any camera that you use whether its Fuji Film, Canon, Sony, Nikon, whatever, it should all apply still. However this is the JPEG workflow that I use when Im shooting JPEGs. I recently did a video about the way that I edit my raw files both black and white and the color ones, Ill link to those above and one of the questions that came from that of course mostly was what about the JPEGs? How did you edit those JPEGs? So today I am going to answer that question and go through my JPEG workflow in Lightroom. (soft instrumental music) As always, it would be remise of me to actually not ask you to like, subscribe, hit that bell, smash it as they would say in America. JPEG decoding Extract the Huffman tables and decode the bits. Extract DCT coefficients by undoing the run-length and delta encodings. Use DCT coefficients to combine cosine waves and regenerate pixel values for each 8x8 block. Convert YCbCr to RGB for each pixel. Display the resulting RGB image.
Image decoding is the process of converting the encoded image back to a uncompressed bitmap which can then be rendered on the screen. This involves the exact reverse of the steps involved in encoding the image.
Higher image quality translates into more available data when it comes to photo editing, giving RAWs a definitive edge over JPEGs. Editing programs like docHub Camera RAW, Bridge, or Lightroom are built for fine-tuning RAWs into polished final photos.
What is a JPEG File? JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. Its a standard image format for containing lossy and compressed image data. Despite the huge reduction in file size JPEG images maintain reasonable image quality.
A Smaller File Size JPEGs are stored as compressed files. This means each JPEG has very small file size and wont eat up all the storage on your memory card. A smaller file size is key if youre on a long shoot, and dont want to keep having to swap out your cameras memory card because its filling up too fast.

The encoding process consists of the following steps: Transform RGB to YIQ or YUV and subsample color. Perform DCT on images blocks. Apply Quantization. Perform Zigzag ordering and run-length encoding. Perform Entropy coding.

Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
