If you have used Heading styles in your document, creating an automatic table of contents is easy. Place your cursor where you want your table of contents to be. On the References Ribbon, in the Table of Contents Group, click on the arrow next to the Table of Contents icon, and select Insert Table of Contents.

First, go through the document and add a heading with a heading style wherever you want a table of contents entry. Then, insert an automatic table of contents, and update it automatically whenever you make a change.
Go to Insert Text Box, and then select Draw Text Box. Click or tap in the document, and drag to draw the text box the size that you want. To add text to a text box, select inside the text box, and then type or paste text.
However, with the right formatting, Word can create and update a table of contents automatically. Step 1: Apply heading styles. Step 2: Insert the table of contents. Step 3: Update as needed.
Unlock a protected document On the Review tab, in the Protect group, click Restrict Editing. In the Restrict Formatting and Editing task pane, click Stop Protection. If you are prompted to provide a password, type the password.
