Use footnotes for formatting academic or professional documents or taking notes in the workplace. You can use them if youre writing a book, research paper or journal article to provide the sources of the information you include.
You can use footnotes to place detailed explanatory or supplementary information at the bottom of a page; use in-text references to cite others works. Use superscript numerals for footnote numbering. You can also place explanations, details, contradictions, and examples in the text rather than in footnotes.
Footnotes should appear at the bottom of the page on which they are referenced rather than at the end of the paper. Footnotes should be in 10 pt. Times. They should be single-spaced, and there should be a footnote separator rule (line).
Footnotes should: Include the pages on which the cited information is found so that readers easily find the source. Match with a superscript number (example: 1) at the end of the sentence referencing the source. Begin with 1 and continue numerically throughout the paper. Do not start the order over on each page.
To insert a footnote: Open the References tab and in the Footnotes group select Insert Footnote. Type the text for the footnote. Double-click the footnote reference mark to return to the reference mark in the document.
If the Insert Footnote button is grayed out, open the Footnote and Endnote dialog (click the small arrow in the bottom right of the Footnotes part of the References ribbon) and change the radio button to allow Footnotes instead of Endnotes. Why does MS Word produce so many temporary files when a Word document is open?
Alt+Ctrl+F to insert a footnote. Alt+Ctrl+D to insert an endnote.
To do this, first select the text that you wish to mark as a citation within your table of authorities. Then click the Mark Citation button in the Table of Authorities button group on the References tab within the Ribbon. The keyboard shortcut for this dialog box is Alt+Shift+I on your keyboard.
Footnotes should be placed on the same page as their accompanying text. Footnote numbers are placed in superscript, usually at the end of the sentence. If you are referring to a word, place the footnote number directly after the word.
You cannot insert a citation into a text box because it is not part of the main body of the text.
