The default lease time for the DHCP server is 24 hours. When setting the lease time on your DHCP server, consider your goals, usage patterns of your site, and service arrangements for your DHCP server.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway.
Failure to adjust the lease time will likely result in a shortage of IP addresses. You want to make sure that any IP addresses that are being used just temporarily expire after a set amount of time. You may even have to set the DHCP lease time on your home network if you have many devices.
Generally, the recommended time to lease an IP address is 48 hours (172800 seconds) to renew the IP address once a day. After applying the specified parameters, clients will receive an IP address for 1 minute, after which they will send a request to the DHCP server for a new IP address every 30 seconds.
A DHCP lease is a temporary assignment of an IP address to a device on the network. When using DHCP to manage a pool of IP addresses, each client served on the network is only renting its IP address. Thus, IP addresses managed by a DHCP server are only assigned for a limited period of time.
A short lease period of say 30 minutes might be useful to ensure that IP addresses are returned quickly to the shared pool. However, short lease periods also mean that workstations must renew their leases more often, which puts an extra strain on the network and DHCP server.
When the lease expires or a client logs out and releases its IP address, the server reclaims the IP address, which can then be allocated to other clients. To continue using this IP address, the client must renew its IP address lease.
In short, by selecting the longest DHCP lease time possible, you can reduce the odds of a device having its IP address changed. A lease that never expires is ideal, but even extending the lease time from a day to a week reduces the number of potential address changes from 365 to 52.
