Hi, Im Rob. Welcome to Math Antics! In this lesson, were going to talk about the Distributive Property, which is a really useful tool in Algebra. And if you watched our video called The Distributive Property in Arithmetic, then you already know the basics of how the Distributive Property works. The key idea is that the Distributive Property allows you to take a factor and distribute it to each member of a group of things that are being added or subtracted. Instead of multiplying the factor by the entire group as a whole, you can distribute it to be multiplied by each member of the group individually. And in that previous video, we saw how you can take a problem like: 3 times the group (4 + 6) and simplify it two different ways. You could either simplify what was in the group first, OR you could use the distributive property to distribute a copy of the factor 3 to each member of the group, and no matter which way you go, you get the same answer. But in Algebra, things are a little

The Distributive Law says that multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately. Example: 3 (2 + 4) = 32 + 34. So the 3 can be distributed across the 2+4 into 3 times 2 and 3 times 4.
We have 4 ways of solving one-step equations: Adding, Substracting, multiplication and division. If we add the same number to both sides of an equation, both sides will remain equal. If we subtract the same number from both sides of an equation, both sides will remain equal.

The formula for the distributive property is expressed as, a (b + c) = (a b) + (a c); where, a, b, and c are the operands. Here, the number outside the brackets is multiplied with each term inside the brackets and then the products are added.
The distributive property deals with simplifying parentheses by multiplying the term on the outside with those on the inside separately. This can be used to help solve equations where the variable is part of a term inside or outside the parentheses.
What is the distributive property of algebraic expressions? The distributive property of algebraic expressions indicates that we need to multiply each term in either the sum or the difference in an expression by a value outside the parentheses. The value outside the parentheses with the sum or difference is a number.
