Hi, Im Rob. Welcome to Math Antics! In this lesson, were going to talk about the Distributive Property, which is a really useful tool in Algebra. And if you watched our video called The Distributive Property in Arithmetic, then you already know the basics of how the Distributive Property works. The key idea is that the Distributive Property allows you to take a factor and distribute it to each member of a group of things that are being added or subtracted. Instead of multiplying the factor by the entire group as a whole, you can distribute it to be multiplied by each member of the group individually. And in that previous video, we saw how you can take a problem like: 3 times the group (4 + 6) and simplify it two different ways. You could either simplify what was in the group first, OR you could use the distributive property to distribute a copy of the factor 3 to each member of the group, and no matter which way you go, you get the same answer. But in Algebra, things are a little

Distributive property with variables Multiply, or distribute, the outer term to the inner terms. Combine like terms. Arrange terms so constants and variables are on opposite sides of the equals sign. Solve the equation and simplify, if needed.
In algebra, distribution means to spread out terms equally across an expression. We refer to what were doing as the distributive property, which can be defined as a(b + c) = ab + ac. Why do we distribute? Its a way of simplifying expressions.
When you distribute something, you are dividing it into parts. In math, the distributive property helps simplify difficult problems because it breaks down expressions into the sum or difference of two numbers.

Example: Solve the expression: 6 ( 20 + 5 ) using the distributive property of multiplication over addition. Lets use the property to calculate the expression 6 ( 20 + 5 ) , the number 6 is spread across the two addends. To put it simply, we multiply each addend by 6 and then the products can be added.
Algebraic distribution means to multiply each of the terms within the parentheses by another term that is outside the parentheses.
The distributive property states that an expression which is given in form of A (B + C) can be solved as A (B + C) = AB + AC. This distributive law is also applicable to subtraction and is expressed as, A (B - C) = AB - AC. This means operand A is distributed between the other two operands.

Suppose a, b, c are integers, then the distributive property of multiplication over addition of integers can be written as a(b + c) = ab + bc.
