Ship chartering is the process of renting a ship to move cargo from one location to another. This is in much the same way as a company might hire a lorry to transport goods by road. An agreement, known as a charter party, is made between the parties involved in ship chartering, namely the charterer and the shipowner.
Demise charter, or bareboat charter, occurs when an owner hires or leases the vessel to a charterer who then provides the crew, together with stores and bunkers as well as paying for all the operating costs. In such cases the vessel will then likely be sub-let by the bareboat charterer on time and/or voyage charters.
The voyage charter is the most common. Under this method a ship is chartered for a one-way voyage between specific ports with a specified cargo at a negotiated rate of freight.
There are three main types of charters voyage charter, time charter, and demise charter. The demise charter is often known as a bareboat charter, and grants ownership or possession of the vessel to the charterer subject to certain time-bound conditions.
What is the Charter Period? The period of a time charter begins with delivery of the vessel to the charterers. This means the placing of the ship and her crew at the disposal of the charterers at the place stipulated under the charterparty.
The time charter agreement can span anywhere from a few days to a few years. This is a long-term agreement that works on a single rate of payment known as the freight rate. Payment is to be remitted every quarter and does not fluctuate under ordinary circumstances.
Time charter equivalent is calculated by taking voyage revenues, subtracting voyage expense, including canal, bunker and port costs, and then dividing the total by the round-trip voyage duration in days. It gives shipping companies a tool to measure period-to-period changes.
Unlike with voyage charters, the two parties will not need to agree on ports of call and destinations, as the charterer has complete discretion over this. With a time charter, the ship owner does not cover all costs. Instead, the charterer must pay for fuel and supply costs, as well as the cost of cargo operations.
In a time charter, the shipper (the charterer) pays the ship owner a rate in dollars per day and the charterer, not the ship owner, covers the fuel and voyage costs. If global bulk commodity shippers expect spot prices to rise substantially in the future, they lock in their transport costs by signing time charters.
What is the difference between Bareboat Charter and Demise Charter? If ship owners lease the ship with ship owners crew members it is called Demise Charter. If ship owners lease the ship without crew members it is called Bareboat Charter. Ship Managers (Ship Management Companies) provide technical management services.
