Got questions?

Below are some common questions from our customers that may provide you with the answer you're looking for. If you can't find an answer to your question, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

If you have damaged or mutilated currency, or need currency replaced, contact the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. If you have currency you suspect is counterfeit, contact your local Secret Service Field Office. For questions about coins, please contact the U.S. Mint.
What happens if you accidentally shred money? You can use your cash as is if a corner is missing. If its ripped into two pieces, tape them back together and take the bill to a bank, where they will make sure the serial numbers on both sides of the note match and give you a new one.
These notes, which are commonly referred to as mutilated currency, should be sent to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Mutilated Currency Division, Office of Financial Management for validation and redemption.
The recipient must not place any replica of U.S. currency on any product or container into which shredded currency is placed, or on any related advertising or other written material. The recipient must agree not to resell or otherwise dispose of the residue without Treasury approval.
While the Federal Reserve does not accept deposits of mutilated currency, its important to know what to do and what not to do with it.
When the Treasury issues a note, the government guarantees its worth whether it has been scorched, shredded or digested. As long as the workers can identify the serial number and ensure people arent sending in counterfeits, the government will reimburse the value of the disfigured paper.
You can exchange damaged currency at any bank.
No redemption will be made when: A submission, or any portion thereof, demonstrates a pattern of intentional mutilation or an attempt to defraud the United States. In such instances, the entire submission will be destroyed or retained as evidence.
Larger amounts of shredded currency for use in artistic or commercial purposes will need to be obtained from a Federal Reserve bank; and written approval from BEPs Chief, Office of Compliance, is required before a Federal Reserve Bank will consider honoring currency residue requests.
50% or less of a note identifiable as United States currency is present and the method of mutilation and supporting evidence demonstrate to the satisfaction of the BEP that the missing portions have been totally destroyed.
