Yes, you can watch content at 144Hz with a USB-C cable. DisplayPort Alternate Mode, which allows USB-C to transmit video and audio, supports a 4K video resolution at a 144Hz refresh rate. In addition to supporting USB-C, it also supports HDMI 2.0.
The VMM9430 and DisplayLink DL-7400 support up to four 4K120/144 Hz displays and bring IoT capability to uniquely address performance, flexibility, and management of the hybrid office.
HDMI 2.0 144Hz options are compression-free, with full support at 1080p and 1440p with full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. It cant quite handle 4K at 144Hz, but with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, 120Hz is just about possible.
Thank you. To the best of my knowledge (I am not a DisplayLink employee), the maximum refresh rate supported by any DisplayLink chipset is 60Hz.
Heres how it works: DisplayLink software installs and acts like a normal display on the host. It detects monitors connected through a DisplayLink device and presents them to the operating system (for example Windows) as if they were normally attached monitors.
DisplayLink has a range of devices to support different technology needs from USB2 to USB3, Ethernet and a full range of monitors resolution from HD (1920x1080) to UHD (3840x2160), Cinema 4K (4096x2160) and 5K (5120x2880).
DisplayLink Limitations An uncompressed 4K60 video signal requires 12 Gbps of bandwidth. The latest DisplayLink chips run over USB 3.0 which has a bandwidth of 5 Gbps. Even a single 4K signal is too big, let alone multiple displays. This is why DisplayLink needs to compress the captured screen.

Dual 4K USB-C Dock supports refresh rates of up to 144 Hz for 2K video, via either the HDMI or USB-C ports. You can even output to two displays simultaneously, at up to 4K resolution.
