For digital documents in PDF form, bates numbers are added to the header or footer sections of documents to help in the unique identification of pages.
Bates numbering (also known as Bates stamping, Bates branding, Bates coding or Bates labeling) is a method of sequentially numbering pages with a reference number. A hand-operated Bates numbering device is used to stamp a number on a page, and the numbers will automatically advance after each stamping.
Use a font with good numerals. Among system fonts, I like Franklin Gothic Medium or Franklin Gothic Demi. Avoid fonts that are condensed or dark on the page (e.g., Arial Black). These fonts are hard to read at small sizes and dont stand up well to scanning or photocopying.
Create a custom stamp Open the Stamps Palette by: Choose Tools Stamp Stamps Palette. Click Import, and select the file. If the file has more than one page, scroll to the page you want, and then click OK. Choose a category from the menu or type a new category name, name the custom stamp, and then click OK.
Bates numbers (bates stamps, bates labels) are numbers used to uniquely identify pages within a set of documents. Bates numbers are used in almost all law firms as an agreed-upon method between parties to ensure a common naming convention when referring to given pages.
A unique numeric or alphanumeric identifier attached to individual documents and pages to make each document and page easily identifiable and retrievable. Bates numbers are used in the legal, medical, and business fields.
It gained its name from the Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine, patented in the 1890s by Edwin G. Bates. This sequential-numbering stamp was used to manually mark each page in a record.
To Bates across a Portfolio: Close the Portfolio if it is already open. Choose Advanced Document Processing Bates Numbering Add. Click the Add Files button and locate the Portfolio you wish to process. Click the Output Options button to get to the Output options window: Click OK to open the Bates Numbering window.
Bates Numbering For a single document, open the file, then select Tools / Legal Tools / Bates Numbering. Since Current Document is already selected, continue by clicking Next Make choices for your Bates number by selecting position, font, prefix / suffix and more.
Bates Numbering (or Bates Stamping) assigns unique identifiers to each page in a collection of documents. Its a way to index document contents so theyre easier to find later.
