Labelling Tables and Figures Figure captions are generally placed below the figures, while table captions must be placed above the tables. This is because we generally read tables from the top down, and therefore want to see the caption at the top. Figures are not always read top down.
A graphic aid that shows information visually so that the reader can better understand and remember the ideas. A diagram gives the reader a picture of how a process or relationship works. Some diagrams illustrate information in the text. Others add important new information.
A diagram is a drawing, image, or sketch that is used to help the reader visualize what the author is describing in the text. There are certain components that diagrams have to help the reader understand them and the text.
A reference within the text to a table, graph, diagram, etc. taken from a source should include the author, date and page number in brackets to enable the reader to identify the data. If you have already named the author in the text, only the publication year and page number needs to be mentioned in brackets.
Informational text features help the reader more easily navigate the text and often provide additional information to help students comprehend the content. Diagrams Understand a more detailed or sim- plified view of information. Sidebars Gather additional or explana- tory information.
3) Figures and tables should be numbered sequentially ing to when they are referenced in the body of the text. For example, the first figure mentioned should be Figure 1, the second Figure 2, etc.; the same goes for tables.
Refer to Tables and Figures before They Appear in Your Document. Traditionally, tables and figures should be mentioned in a sentence before they appear in the document. This first reference is important because it helps your readers understand the connection between the tables and figures with the rest of the text.
Tables should be: Referenced in the order they appear in the text. Labeled with the table number and descriptive title above the table. Labeled with column and/or row labels that describe the data, including units of measurement. Set apart from the text itself; text does not flow around the table.
Always refer to a table by their number. Statements such as in the table below or the table shown on page 78 should not be used. Provide each table with a brief but explanatory title. This should appear below the table number.
Formatting Requirements. Tables, figures, illustrations, and other such items should be identified with the word Table, Figure, or other appropriate descriptor, and include a title and/or caption. The title or caption must be included in the List of Tables, List of Figures, or other list.
