When an artist gets signed to a label they get money, called an advance, to make a record. When the record is released, the label keeps all the money until they have recouped their expenses, which includes the advance, recording costs, promotion, and legal fees.
A 20% royalty for the artist is not uncommon, which works out to about 16% of the total audio stream value going to the artist with 64% going to the label. That money wont, however, necessarily end up in the artists pocket.
Over the course of his prolific career in AR, Pete Ganbarg, Executive Vice President and Head of AR at Atlantic Records,
Record labels dont tend to ask for money. If you are signing to a label they should be able to expect to monetise your music. Normally a record label will advance the costs that come with promoting and distributing your music. A record label which asks for money in order to join them is, very uncommon.
If the label is a major record company, the artist split can range from 13% to over 20%. These artist agreements will often come with album advances. For indie labels, the split can be as high as 50%, but will often not include an advance.
As a quick reference, record labels can keep a cut anywhere from 50-90% of your earnings. It is an industry norm for a new artist to only receive 10-16% of their sales.
Under the traditional recording agreement, recording artist royalties usually range from 10% to 25% of the suggested retail price for top-line albums (although many record companies have begun to compute royalties on the wholesale price).
The answer is, generally, no. Record labels are the ones pouring money into the artist. They are doing all of this work upfront to hopefully make money off of you eventually; theyre not doing it for free. But they do not typically ask you for any money upfront; this is likely the preposition of a scammer!
