It sounds like the problem is that the Picture Placeholders setting has been turned on. You can control this setting in this manner: Display the Word Options dialog box.

There could be a few reasons why you are unable to delete certain files on Google Drive. It is possible that the file is shared with someone else and they have set the permissions so that you cannot delete it.
