Base64 is also widely used for sending e-mail attachments. This is required because SMTP in its original form was designed to transport 7-bit ASCII characters only. This encoding causes an overhead of 3337% (33% by the encoding itself; up to 4% more by the inserted line breaks).
Decode from Base64 format. Simply enter your data then push the decode button. For encoded binaries (like images, documents, etc.) use the file upload form a little further down on this page. Source character set.
Base64 is not Encryption Rather it is a useful way of transferring or storing large data in the form of a string. While it may obfuscate that actual data from should surfers, anyone who has access to base64 encoded data can easily decode it.
First, save the whole message as a text file onto your desktop. Then open the text file with a decompression utility like WinZip or Stuffit. Sometimes the utility will recognize the file as a compressed file, and decode the file for you into the original attachment.
Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. [ Download now: A sysadmins guide to Bash scripting. ] Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences.
Decoding base64 First, you remove any padding characters from the end of the encoded string. Then, you translate each base64 character back to their six-bit binary representation. Finally, you divide the bits into byte-sized (eight-bit) chunks and translate the data back to its original format.
Radix-64 (as described for OpenPGP) OpenPGP, described in RFC 4880, describes Radix-64 encoding, also known as ASCII Armor. Radix-64 is identical to the Base64 encoding described from MIME, with the addition of an optional 24-bit CRC.
Its only useful for very tiny images. Base64 encoded files are larger than the original. The advantage lies in not having to open another connection and make a HTTP request to the server for the image. This benefit is lost very quickly so theres only an advantage for large numbers of very tiny individual images.
Another important distinction is that base 64 does not encrypt any information it uses a standard table of characters to encode and decode information. In other words, any base-64 string can be decoded, as long as the string was encoded using a standard set of characters (which the decoder can also understand).
To decode a file with contents that are base64 encoded, you simply provide the path of the file with the --decode flag. As with encoding files, the output will be a very long string of the original file. You may want to output stdout directly to a file.
