Today's project involves using a piece of O1 tool steel to create a forming tool. The workholding method isn't ideal, but working slowly should be fine. The cutter used is a 3/8 inch, four flute rougher in a corncob style. A tapered end mill is used to create relief on the cutting edge. The forming tool is cut upside down to allow for this. After shaping and adding relief, the forming tool is cut from the parent stock to create a ball shape. To provide support and prevent bouncing, a support block made of aluminum is added underneath the forming tool.
