Indian Day Schools operated for over a century, from the 1860s to 1990s. Similarly to residential schools, the purpose of the day schools was to assimilate Indigenous children and erase Indigenous language and culture. Children who attended Indian Day Schools faced verbal, physical, and sexual abuse.
Tribal control over their schools has been supported by federal legislation and changing practices by the BIA. By 2007, most of the boarding schools had been closed down, and the number of Native American children in boarding schools had declined to 9,500.
A total of 699 federally run Indian day schools operated in every province and territory, with the exception of Newfoundland. Starting in the 1970s, the federal government began the process of transferring operational control of Indian day schools to Indigenous communities.
The residential schools settlement obligated the 48 Catholic entities involved to pay $79 million, which was broken into three parts, including making best efforts to raise $25 million for residential school survivors.
The Canadian government and the Roman Catholic, Anglican, United, and Presbyterian churches operated nearly 700 Indian Day Schools across Canada, in every province and territory except for Newfoundland. Indian Day Schools operated for over a century, from the 1860s to 1990s.
