The residential schools settlement obligated the 48 Catholic entities involved to pay $79 million, which was broken into three parts, including making best efforts to raise $25 million for residential school survivors.
The Indian residential schools in Canada were predominately funded and operated by the Government of Canada and Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and United churches. To a lesser scale, some Indian residential schools were funded by provincial governments or by the various religious orders.
The Canadian government and the Roman Catholic, Anglican, United, and Presbyterian churches operated nearly 700 Indian Day Schools across Canada, in every province and territory except for Newfoundland. Indian Day Schools operated for over a century, from the 1860s to 1990s.
The settlement agreement includes $10,000 in individual compensation for all persons who attended an Indian Residential School as a day scholar during the day, but did not sleep there overnight. A list of Indian Residential Schools included in this settlement is found in Schedule E of the agreement.
In 2019, Canada signed a $1.47-billion settlement with thousands of former students at the 600-plus schools that operated across Canada between 1863 and 2000. Compensation is on a tiered system for harms suffered, from level one to level five, ranging from $10,000 to $200,000.
Who is MDSSC? The McLean Day Schools Settlement Corporation (MDSSC) was established as part of the historic McLean Federal Indian Day Schools Class Action settlement, which endowed MDSSC with a $200 Million Legacy Fund for projects to support Survivors of federally-operated Indian Day Schools, and their families.
To be eligible for compensation, an individual must have attended one of the identified Federal Indian Day Schools or Federal Day Schools on Schedule K of the Settlement Agreement (the school list) and experienced certain abuse/harm during the time the school was run by the federal government.
