Base64 is a group of similar binary-to-text encoding schemes that represent binary data in an ASCII string format by translating it into a radix-64 representation. The term Base64 originates from a specific MIME content transfer encoding.
Another important distinction is that base 64 does not encrypt any information it uses a standard table of characters to encode and decode information. In other words, any base-64 string can be decoded, as long as the string was encoded using a standard set of characters (which the decoder can also understand).
The maximum length in 2732 characters. The result of the function is a varying length character string in CCSID 1208 that contains the bytes of character-string as a Base64-encoded string.
The base64 conversion of a given string will always be the same. There is no shorter version of base64. But what you can do is retrieve only the first characters of the base64 result; with cut for instance. Using cut this way is also safe if the base64 result is shorter than 10 characters.
By default, the body size for base64 encoded data is 7 MB. You could increase the size as required.
Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. [ Download now: A sysadmins guide to Bash scripting. ] Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences.
Length of data Base64 uses 4 ascii characters to encode 24-bits (3 bytes) of data. To encode, it splits up the three bytes into 4 6-bit numbers. A 6-bit number can represent 64 possible value. Each possible value corresponds to an ascii character.
