(journalism, broadcasting) A caption under a photograph, or more narrowly just the explanatory text block under a photograph, excluding the title.
Cutlines: Cutlines (at newspapers and some magazines) are the words (under the caption, if there is one) describing the photograph or illustration. See example. President Obama and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have agreed to disagree over the rules of a death match scheduled between the two in the Capitol Rotunda.
In journalism, the cutline is the text below a picture, explaining what the reader is looking at. Its what most people call a caption, but to a journalist, a caption is more like a title, while the cutline first describes what is happening in the picture, and then explains the significance of the event depicted.
Banner: A wide headline extending across the entire page. Byline: The reporters name, usually at the beginning of a story. Cutline: A line or block of type providing descriptive information about a photo. Deck: A small headline running below the main headline; also called a drop head.

Photo Cutline Example John Doe (who) apprehends an intruder (what happened, written in the present tense) late Sunday night (when) at his home (where). The intruder was attempting a home invasion (why). Assuming youve covered the five Wsand that youve done so accuratelyyouve done your job. Thats it.
A cutline is written like a straight news piece boiled down to a single sentence. The sentence should include the five Ws of pertinent information: who, what, when, where and why.

Captions: Captions are the short (usually one-line) headlines / titles / explanations for the photo appearing over/above the cutlines. Cutlines: Cutlines (at newspapers and some magazines) are the words (under the caption, if. there is one) describing the photograph or illustration.
Most editors wont accept photos of identifiable people unless those people are identified. Cutlines provide the names, and often the significance of those in the photo. An editor also likes to see people named in cutlines because it implies (though not legally) permission to publish their picture.
