In most parts of Idaho, IDL issues permits to the public to cut firewood on state endowment trust lands for non-commercial purposes. Contact an IDL office for information about firewood cutting permits.
Please note that gathering wood for personal use while camping in Oregons state forests is allowed without obtaining a permit. Some general tips for collecting firewood on state forestland: Contact the local district office - You may need a permit. Downed wood and logs only: No cutting standing trees (alive or dead)
Most national forests allow users to harvest trees for personal use firewood and Christmas trees, but you must first have a Forest Service-issued permit and you must follow specific guidelines, which can vary from forest to forest.
Each permit is good for a maximum of 12 cords of firewood. In 2022, personal use firewood permits are available FREE of charge.
