A handful of species on Earth share a seemingly mysterious trait: a menstrual cycle. Were one of the select few. Monkeys, apes, bats, humans, and possibly elephant shrews are the only mammals on Earth that menstruate. We also do it more than any other animal, even though its a waste of nutrients and can be a physical inconvenience. So wheres the sense in this uncommon biological process? The answer begins with pregnancy. During this process, the bodys resources are cleverly used to shape a suitable environment for a fetus, creating an internal haven for a mother to nurture her growing child. In this respect, pregnancy is awe-inspiring, but thats only half the story. The other half reveals that pregnancy places a mother and her child at odds. As for all living creatures, the human body evolved to promote the spread of its genes. For the mother, that means she should try to provide equally for all her offspring. But a mother and her fetus dont share exactly the same genes. The fet

Do use punctuation (but dont overly rely on it) Punctuation makes all text easier to understand and alt text is no exception. Screen readers pause for periods, semi-colons, commas, question marks, exclamation points, and paragraph endings. However, a screen reader may skip punctuation depending on the speed setting.
Also called alt tags and alt descriptions, alt text is the written copy that appears in place of an image on a webpage if the image fails to load on a users screen. This text helps screen-reading tools describe images to visually impaired readers and allows search engines to better crawl and rank your website.
Alt text allows screen readers to read information about images out loud to users who are blind or and visually impaired. Alternative text is necessary so that people who are blind or visually impaired can still access the information provided by an image and understand the purpose of the image.
Alternative (Alt) Text is meant to convey the why of the image as it relates to the content of a document or webpage. It is read aloud to users by screen reader software, and it is indexed by search engines. It also displays on the page if the image fails to load, as in this example of a missing image.
Alt text should describe the content and purpose of the video. Ideally, a video should contain a second audio track with a description of the video elements that are purely visual and not accessible to people with a visual disability.
The text alternative for the image should convey the action that will be initiated (the purpose of the image) rather than a description of the image. Missing or empty alt values create docHub problems for screen reader users because functional images are essential to the functionality of the content.
Dont add alt text to every image. You should add alt text to most images on a webpage for the sake of SEO, UX, and accessibility however, there are exceptions. Images that are purely decorative or are described in text nearby, for example, should have an empty alt attribute.
Do not include image of, picture of, graphic of at the start of every alt-text description. Most screen readers announce either image or graphic before reading out the alt-text. Adding image of creates a tedious and repetitive experience for screen reader users.
