Hi. Im Rebecca from engVid. In the next few minutes you will find out if you are giving your email address properly in English, because in English we have certain terminology that we use when we describe an email address. All right? So, in this lesson youll find out if youre doing that properly. Now, unfortunately, lots and lots of people around the world are not doing this properly because theyre following the conventions in their country. Okay? And sometimes theyre borrowing words from other languages, and so on, to give that. So, after this lesson, you will know exactly how to give your email address, how to ask somebody for their email address, and also some of the terminology that we use when were talking about email. All right? So, lets get started. So, first of all, this word email is a new word. Right? So theres still a bit of disagreement around the world, even in the English-speaking world, about exactly how to use some of the detailed aspects of it. For example: D

Googles Gmail service does indeed ignore periods in the address before the @gmail.com. In fact, a Google support page states that dots dont matter in Gmail addresses, and in your example, you could even get a message sent to f.i.r.s.t.n.a.m.e.l.a.s.t.n.a.m.e@gmail.com.
Adding dots doesnt change your address, so dots arent why you got someone elses email. Instead, the sender probably mistyped or forgot the correct address. For example, if someone meant to email john.43.smith@gmail.com but typed john.smith@gmail.com, the message went to you because you own johnsmith@gmail.com.
You can use any of them to receive or send email. Dots dont matter in Gmail addresses. If someone accidentally adds dots to your address when emailing you, youll still get that email. For example, if your email is johnsmith@gmail.com, you own all dotted versions of your address: john.smith@gmail.com.
Originally Answered: Why some people use [at] instead of @ when they share their email address ? As David Lee mentioned, to make it harder for spammers to hit them. Also because many sites automatically spike/delete/disallow email addresses, and the @ is what sets off their automated rule.
Typically people do this to avoid having their email addresses found by spambots that search for a regex that matches email address formatting. By using AT and DOT, the symbols that the spambot is looking for will not show up on the page, and therefore your email address will not be found.
How to use Gmail dot trick? Using the Gmail dot trick is as easy as adding a dot anywhere in a Gmail address before the @ sign while registering at a website. Such as g.tricks@gmail.com, gtrick.s@gmail.com, or g.t.r.i.c.k.s@gmail.com. All the emails sent to these addresses will actually go to gtricks@gmail.com.
If someone accidentally adds dots to your address when emailing you, youll still get that email. For example, if your email is johnsmith@gmail.com, you own all dotted versions of your address: john.smith@gmail.com.
The last part of the email address is the domain that comes right after the at sign. The domain consists of the name of the email server and the top-level domain. So, for example, if we continue with the example of Emma@one.com, one is the name of the email server, and .com is the top-level domain.
Dots in a Gmail address dont matter While some e-mail providers allow for address variations using dots, Google has decided to ignore periods in its users e-mail addresses altogether. Translation: Any combination of your e-mail address and those little dots is sent to the exact same inbox.
On the Internet, @ (pronounced at or at sign or address sign) is the symbol in an E-mail address that separates the name of the user from the users Internet address, as in this hypothetical e-mail address example: msmuffet@tuffet.org.
