So if youre working with CSV, what special characters are actually supported? Technically, all of them! There are no specified limits of what characters can be used in a CSV file.
CSV is a simple format for representing a rectangular array (matrix) of numeric and textual values. It an example of a flat file format. It is a delimited data format that has fields/columns separated by the comma character %x2C (Hex 2C) and records/rows/lines separated by characters indicating a line break.
To avoid formatting change on CSV, you first need to set data format manually. Activate the Insert tab in the Ribbon. Click From Text/CSV in the Get Transform Data section. Select your file. Move to the Step 3 by Next. In the 3rd step, select the columns where youd like to keep the formatting.
Special characters of comma (,) quotation mark, and new line character may cause issues with a CSV import. If you get an import error, open the CSV file in Excel and use the Find Replace tool to change or remove these specific special characters.
A CSV file is a comma delimited ASCII text file. It will open in Excel automatically, because it is made in such a way that Excel can easily parse and display the information in a tabular format. An XLS file is a proprietary binary format that was discontinued a few versions ago.
There are no restrictions on what characters you can use in a CSV file. The limitation is the way the file is encoded. Here is an article on choosing the right encoding, UTF-8 is the recommended encoding for the file because it supports almost every possible character.
CSV is a delimited data format that has fields/columns separated by the comma character and records/rows terminated by newlines. A CSV file does not require a specific character encoding, byte order, or line terminator format (some software do not support all line-end variations).
