um hello in this short video we are going to discuss the difference between copy trait and clone trade in rust so um lets start with the copy trait so first of all we all know that traits are sort of interfaces of rust their compile time and their zero zero cost so copy trait is um most of the times im going to start from the end of the spectrum from the end of the video and go to the start because im going to first say what are the differences between these two and then say what are there what are them actually underneath so the copy trait is just for simpler values its implicit most of the times are i think by almost all the times its implicit so you dont say dot copy on something its not how its working um its cheap most of the times i mean when you see um you dont see copy because its cheap thats the thing if its what if it was expensive ross would have tell you um that it is um not cheap and that is an expensive thing so you need to know about it and you cannot re-imp

Vec does not implement Copy . As such, youll have to use an array or pass a reference.
The clone() method is used to create a copy of a value. The value cloned could be any value type such as character, string, number, boolean, etc.
Some types in Rust are very simple. They are called copy types. These simple types are all on the stack, and the compiler knows their size. That means that they are very easy to copy, so the compiler always copies when you send it to a function.
These simple types include: integers, floats, booleans ( true and false ), and char . On the left you can see Trait Implementations.
Trait std::clone::Clone1.0. Differs from Copy in that Copy is implicit and extremely inexpensive, while Clone is always explicit and may or may not be expensive. In order to enforce these characteristics, Rust does not allow you to reimplement Copy , but you may reimplement Clone and run arbitrary code.
A String is a type that does not implement the Copy trait.
The Drop trait is used in an RAII context, typically when some resource needs to be released/closed when the object is destroyed. In the other hand, a Copy type is a trivial type that can be copied with a memcpy only.
Differs from Copy in that Copy is implicit and an inexpensive bit-wise copy, while Clone is always explicit and may or may not be expensive. In order to enforce these characteristics, Rust does not allow you to reimplement Copy , but you may reimplement Clone and run arbitrary code.
Copies the contents of one file to another. This function will also copy the permission bits of the original file to the destination file. This function will overwrite the contents of to . Note that if from and to both point to the same file, then the file will likely get truncated by this operation.
Deep copies in Rust, i.e. a copy where some data behind a pointer is also copied, new heap-data is allocated, etc, can only happen explicitly; usually by calling . clone() on a type that implements Clone (but not Copy ).
