The SSN Numbering Scheme The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts: The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
Whether the digits in your cell are formatted as text, numbers, or the special Social Security number format, you can use the same functions. To display only the last four digits of identification numbers, use the CONCATENATE, RIGHT, and REPT functions.
Remove all dashes from SSN with Replace feature Select the SSN cells you will remove dashes from, and press Ctrl + H keys together to open the Find and Replace dialog. In the Find and Replace dialog, type dashes into the Find what box, type nothing into the Replace with box, and then click the Replace All button.
If the SSN is entered with its dashes (as in 278-53-6128), then Excel stores it as text. If the SSN is entered without dashes (as in 278536128), then Excel stores it as a number. As you can surmise from this example, custom formats dont allow you to mask out anything except the last portion of any value.
Display Social Security numbers in full Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. See how to select a cell or range of cells. On the Home tab, click the Dialog Box Launcher. next to Number. In the Category box, select Special. In the Type list, choose Social Security Number.
