so a lot of people copy files incorrectly or they might not understand what goes into a basic windows copy just to show you how most people do it right click copy come over here paste this is my network drive this is my local hard drive and we get this nice little graph so why not just do it this way like everyone else does it well theres a couple reasons the big one here is one its not as fast you know arguably so i think this is gonna take maybe a minute and its about five gigs i think maybe six gigs worth of data so not very much and its going at a decent clip however what happens if this was a thousand files well it has to read every one of those files before it will even start copying so thats a big downside the second thing is if theres a bunch of pass and it goes past the character limit this will fail itll itll really just skip those files because its not able to read those long paths and file names and then finally you run into some security and attribute copy problem

Yes, usually but no, sometimes. It depends on the file system. Most common file systems will not acknowledge that one file is the identical copy of and so a copy and paste will result in redundant data usage or as you describe it take up more space.
But all in all, you shouldnt see a difference in speed when copying files on the same drive or outside of it. When it comes to moving a file to a different driveor using the Cut commandyoure basically creating a copy of the file in a different location then deleting the original file.
Run Disk Cleanup. Free up disk space with Storage Sense (Windows 10) Uninstall non-essential applications and games. Move personal data to external hard drive. Save new personal files to another hard drive. Disable hibernation in Windows. Scan your computer with an anti-virus software.
Typically, three data types take up most of your drive space: apps and features, system and reserved files, and temporary files. Hence, reducing the burden of these data types can effectively free up your drive space.
How to Free Up Disk Space on Windows Perform Disk Cleanup. Your computer may run slow because your hard drive has used up almost all its hard disk space. Uninstall programs that you no longer need. Remove unnecessary files. Store files in the Cloud.
During file transfer, file creation causes both high protocol overhead and high file system overhead. For large file transfers, these costs occur only one time. When a large number of small files are transferred, the cost is repetitive and causes slow transfers.
Paste Space Right-click on a target point and select Paste from the context menu. Select the target space and use keyboard shortcut (Ctrl) + (V). Right-click on a space name in the Browser and select Paste from the context menu. Select space and select Paste from the (Edit) menu.
Using Windows Explorer or Command Prompt to copy files does not change the file contents. It just updates the file index table. If the file is in the same folder, the new file copy must have a different name. If you try to download the same file to the same folder, Windows adds a number to the file name.
