hey everyone and welcome to the engineering tool box Channel today Im going to be talking about a very powerful tool known as a control chart but what exactly are control charts and why are they so useful my goal is answer those two questions in this video before I get into things I want to pose a question here we have two charts where Ive plotted output data from two different processes all the time both data sets have the same scale 0 to 100 my question to you is are these processes in control or is one in control on the other out of control let me know what you think and why in the comments below and by the end of the video Ill tell you the answer so the first piece of understanding control charts is understanding variation there are two types of variation common cause variation and special cause variation to help us understand these concepts lets use an example think about the time that you get to work every day is it exactly the same time or what you say you usually arrive be

The control chart is a graph used to study how a process changes over time. Data are plotted in time order. A control chart always has a central line for the average, an upper line for the upper control limit, and a lower line for the lower control limit. These lines are determined from historical data.
Control charts give clear guidance on when to adjust a process and when to leave it alone. Control charts drive process improvement (if used properly). Control charts are accepted by all types of customers. Control charts provide a written record or chart.
To determine the average amount. To determine the spread about the average. To determine if the process is in control (only common cause variation, see Jan 2004 e-zine on the website) To show the result of improvement efforts.
The 8 Control Chart Rules. If a process is in statistical control, most of the points will be near the average, some will be closer to the control limits and no points will be beyond the control limits. The 8 control chart rules listed in Table 1 give you indications that there are special causes of variation present.
Rule 8: A run of 8 consecutive points 1𝝈 (either side) If we get 8 consecutive points 1 sigma from the centerline (either side) then the special cause is available. In other words, 8 consecutive points with no points available in zone C (any side of the centerline).
The following rules can be used to properly interpret control charts: Rule 1 One point beyond the 3 control limit. Rule 2 Eight or more points on one side of the centerline without crossing. Rule 3 Four out of five points in zone B or beyond. Rule 4 Six points or more in a row steadily increasing or decreasing.
Rule of Seven Tests The tests state that an out of control situation is present if one of the following conditions is true: 1) Seven points in a row above the average, 2) Seven points in a row below the average, 3) Seven points in a row trending up, or 4) Seven points in a row trending down.
Control rule means a time-certain date, past, present or future, used to establish participation in a limited entry fishery and may or may not include specific past harvest amounts.
The objective of the control chart is to find any special causes of variation as well as to reflect the process improvements that have been made. Again, to effectively use control charts, you must understand the information in variation.
All control charts have three basic components: a centerline, usually the mathematical average of all the samples plotted. upper and lower statistical control limits that define the constraints of common cause variations. performance data plotted over time.
