Generally, if you took out a federal student loan or consolidated your loans on or after July 1, 2010, you have a federal Direct Loan. There are four types of Direct Loans: Direct Subsidized Loans.
A Direct Consolidation Loan allows you to consolidate (combine) one or more federal education loans into a new Direct Consolidation Loan for the purpose of lowering your monthly payment amount or gaining access to federal forgiveness programs.
Private education loans are not eligible for consolidation. Direct PLUS Loans received by parents to help pay for a dependent students education cannot be consolidated together with federal student loans that the student received.
Consolidation may cause you to lose borrower benefits such as interest rate discounts, principal rebates, or some loan cancellation benefits associated with your current loans. Consolidating your current loans may cause you to lose credit for payments made toward income-driven repayment plan forgiveness or PSLF.
A Direct Consolidation Loan allows you to consolidate (combine) one or more federal education loans into a new Direct Consolidation Loan for the purpose of lowering your monthly payment amount or gaining access to federal forgiveness programs.
You can consolidate your loans now, even if theyre currently in the COVID-19 payment pause. Consolidation could lower your monthly payments when payments begin again. However, consolidation could also extend your repayment period (how long it takes you to pay off your loan).
All federally owned student loans are eligible for forgiveness. If you have Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, Direct Consolidation Loans or FFEL Loans owned by the U.S. Department of Education, theyre all included in the forgiveness plan.
Retention of Subsidy Benefits: There are two possible portions to a Direct Consolidation Loan: subsidized and unsubsidized. Borrowers retain their subsidy benefits on most types of subsidized loans that are consolidated into the subsidized portion of a Direct Consolidation Loan.
The following loans can all be considered for a Direct Consolidation Loan: Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans can be consolidated when borrowers are in their grace period, or at any time in which the borrower is no longer enrolled full-time.
If you have multiple student loans you may be able to combine them into one loan with a fixed interest rate based on the average of the interest rates on the loans being consolidated.
