Conformity is a type of social influence that describes how a person changes their attitude or behaviour in response to group pressure. There are many different situations where people conform and psychologists have categorised three main types of conformity, including: compliance, identification and internalisation.
Aschs results have been replicated several times so the results are reliable. The results of the experiment in terms of conformity rates can, to some extent, explain why people conform to social and cultural norms in real life. Conformity may be universal to some degree but conformity rates vary cross-culturally.
Types of Conformity Types of Conformity. Compliance (or group acceptance) Internalization (genuine acceptance of group norms) Identification (or group membership) Ingratiational. Explanations of Conformity. Normative Conformity. Informational Conformity.
Normative Conformity This type of conformity involves changing ones behavior in order to fit in with a group. For example, a teenager might dress in a certain style because they want to look like their peers who are members of a particular group.
As conformity is a group phenomenon, factors such as group size, unanimity, cohesion, status, prior commitment, and public opinion help determine the level of conformity an individual displays.
Asch concluded that there are two main causes for conformity: people want to be liked by the group or they believe the group is better informed than they are. He found his study results disturbing. To him, they revealed that intelligent, well-educated people would, with very little coaxing, go along with an untruth.
The Asch conformity experiments were a series of studies conducted in the 1950s that demonstrated the power of conformity in groups.
One weakness of the Asch experiment is that it lacks ecological validity. In Aschs experiment, the participants were required to judge lengths of line, which is a very artificial task and everyday examples of conformity (e.g. peer pressure) do not involve such mundane requests.
Harvard psychologist Herbert Kelman identified three major types of conformity: compliance, identification, and internalization. Compliance is public conformity, while possibly keeping ones own original beliefs independent.
Examples of conformity A person going to work dresses in the same style as colleagues in order to fit in. A college student takes drugs because they dont want to appear boring when all their friends are doing it. A person walks around the airport like a zombie acting very passively, to fit in with other passengers.
