Conformity is a type of social influence that describes how a person changes their attitude or behaviour in response to group pressure. There are many different situations where people conform and psychologists have categorised three main types of conformity, including: compliance, identification and internalisation.
In collectivist cultures, conformity brings positive feelings of harmony and connectedness, whereas in individualist cultures people enjoy the feelings of freedom and independence from being unique (Kim and Markus, 1999).
: to be similar or identical. also : to be in agreement or harmony. used with to or with. changes that conform with our plans. : to be obedient or compliant.
Compliance is going along with a request or demand, even if you do not agree with the request. In Aschs studies, the participants complied by giving the wrong answers, but privately did not accept that the obvious wrong answers were correct.
Examples of conformity A person going to work dresses in the same style as colleagues in order to fit in. A college student takes drugs because they dont want to appear boring when all their friends are doing it. A person walks around the airport like a zombie acting very passively, to fit in with other passengers.

Social influence is the process by which an individuals attitudes, beliefs or behavior are modified by the presence or action of others. Four areas of social influence are conformity, compliance and obedience, and minority influence.
3 THREE TYPES OF SOCIAL INFLUENCE. There are three types of influence that a social presence can have on a consumer: utilitarian, value-expressive, and informational (Burnkrant Cousineau, 1975; Deutsch Gerard, 1955; Park Lessig, 1977).
Aschs Conformity Experiments In this series of famous experiments, conducted in the 1950s, psychologist Solomon Asch asked participants to complete what they believed was a simple perceptual task. They were asked to choose a line that matched the length of one of three different lines.
Compliance is when an individual changes his or her behavior in response to an explicit or implicit request made by another person. Compliance is often referred to as an active form of social influence in that it is usually intentionally initiated by a person.
