Conformity is a type of social influence that describes how a person changes their attitude or behaviour in response to group pressure. There are many different situations where people conform and psychologists have categorised three main types of conformity, including: compliance, identification and internalisation.
Asch concluded that there are two main causes for conformity: people want to be liked by the group or they believe the group is better informed than they are. He found his study results disturbing. To him, they revealed that intelligent, well-educated people would, with very little coaxing, go along with an untruth.
Conformity can also be simply defined as yielding to group pressures (Crutchfield, 1955). Group pressure may take different forms, for example bullying, persuasion, teasing, criticism, etc. Conformity is also known as majority influence (or group pressure).
Conformity and deviance are two responses to real or imagined pressures from others. Conformity means going along ones peersindividuals of a persons own status. Deviance is a behaviour that violates the standards of conduct or expectations or social norms of a group or society.
Identification is the middle level of conformity. Here a person changes their public behaviour (the way they act) and their private beliefs, but only while they are in the presence of the group they are identifying with. This is usually a short-term change and is often the result of normative social influence.
By being conformist, we copy the things that are popular in the world. And those things are often good and useful. His example is that of washing hands. Everyone knows they should wash their hands after dirty activity, even if they dont know a thing about germs.
Aschs Conformity Experiments In this series of famous experiments, conducted in the 1950s, psychologist Solomon Asch asked participants to complete what they believed was a simple perceptual task. They were asked to choose a line that matched the length of one of three different lines.
Examples of conformity A person going to work dresses in the same style as colleagues in order to fit in. A college student takes drugs because they dont want to appear boring when all their friends are doing it. A person walks around the airport like a zombie acting very passively, to fit in with other passengers.
Formal deviance includes criminal violation of formally-enacted laws. Examples of formal deviance include robbery, theft, rape, murder, and assault. Informal deviance refers to violations of informal social norms, which are norms that have not been codified into law.
Compliance can be a form of conformity. Compliance is going along with a request or demand, even if you do not agree with the request. In Aschs studies, the participants complied by giving the wrong answers, but privately did not accept that the obvious wrong answers were correct.
