A statement of work should contain; an overview, governance detail, the approach, phases and tasks, deliverables, timeline and milestones, estimate and payment schedule, and any assumptions.
Or Work Order (WO) or Service Order (SO)? The Statement of Work (SOW) is also commonly referred to as a Scope of Work (SOW) by freelancers and Engagement of Services by attorneys. Other industries use the terms Work Order or Service Order.
A Statement of Work (SOW) is typically used when the task is well-known and can be described in specific terms. Statement of Objective (SOO) and Performance Work Statement (PWS) emphasize performance-based concepts such as desired service outcomes and performance standards.
The statement of work (SOW) is a legally binding document that captures and defines all the work management aspects of your project. Youll note the activities, deliverables and timetable for the project.
Statement of Objective (SOO): The SOO is a Government prepared document that provides the basic, high-level objectives of the acquisition. It is provided in the solicitation in lieu of a government written Performance Work Statement.
Instead, a SOW should tell a story, which explains to your reader, who is not familiar with the deal, all of the core details, including (1) what you are doing and why, (2) what product or service you are getting/delivering, (3) who is responsible for delivering and when, and (4) what a successful vs.
The SOO replaces the Statement of Work (SOW) in solicitations: The SOO is not a replacement for the SOW. The documents are different in scope and nature. There must be a SOO and SOW in every solicitation: Some have thought that every solicitation must have both a SOO and a government SOW, not so.
A statement of work is a highly detailed, legally-binding contract, while a project charter is a shorter, high-level, non-legal overview. Youll often create project charters after the SOW. Theres no difference between a scope of work and a statement of work.
A SoW is not legally binding. As such, it is often accompanied by a formal legal contract that outlines the specifics of an agreement such as the parties, terms, reporting requirements, payment obligations, etc.
At a minimum, the SoW should clearly detail: Project objectives: purpose statement, i.e, why the project is happening and what it will achieve. Project governance: who has approval to do what.
