You can set the collation by adding the T-SQL COLLATE clause to the CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE statements. When you use those statements, you define the column and its properties, including any collation settings.
Collations in SQL Server provide sorting rules, case, and accent sensitivity properties for your data. Collations that are used with character data types, such as char and varchar, dictate the code page and corresponding characters that can be represented for that data type.
You can set the collation by adding the T-SQL COLLATE clause to the CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE statements. When you use those statements, you define the column and its properties, including any collation settings.
The collate clause is used for case sensitive and case insensitive searches in the columns of the SQL server. There are two types of collate clause present: SQLLatin1GeneralCP1CSAS for case sensitive. SQLLatin1GeneralCP1CIAS for case insensitive.
You can change the collation of any new objects that are created in a user database by using the COLLATE clause of the ALTER DATABASE statement. This statement does not change the collation of the columns in any existing user-defined tables. These can be changed by using the COLLATE clause of ALTER TABLE.
You can use the COLLATE clause to apply a character expression to a certain collation. Character literals and variables are assigned the default collation of the current database. Column references are assigned the definition collation of the column.
Collation is a set of rules that tell database engine how to compare and sort the character data in SQL Server. Collation can be set at different levels in SQL Server. Below are the three levels: SQL Server level. Database level.
Changing the instance collation involves the following steps: Make sure you have all the information or scripts needed to re-create your user databases and all the objects in them. Export all your data using a tool such as the bcp Utility. Drop all the user databases.
Issue/Introduction. The documentation recommends SQLLatin1GeneralCP1CIAS as the recommended code page, but that is now considered obsolete in newer versions of MS SQL Server.
Issue: Cannot resolve the collation conflict between SQLLatin1GeneralCP1CIAS and Latin1GeneralCIAS Simply apply the default collation to the fields you are comparing.
