To view a collation setting for a column in Object Explorer In Object Explorer, connect to an instance of Database Engine and then expand that instance. Expand Databases, expand the database and then expand Tables. Expand the table that contains the column and then expand Columns.
The COLLATE function copies the string, but puts the new collation specification rather than the original specification into the copy. The string itself is unchanged; only the collation specifier associated with the string is changed.
Collation allows you to specify alternative rules for comparing strings, which can be used to compare and sort data ing to a particular language or other user-specified rules.
You can use the COLLATE clause to apply a character expression to a certain collation. Character literals and variables are assigned the default collation of the current database. Column references are assigned the definition collation of the column.
Each collation serves two purposes. The first is to provide a character set that defines the bit pattern associated with each character. SQL Server stores character data using either one byte or two bytes per character, depending on the columns data type and assigned collation.
In a database, a collation is a set of rules that determine how data is sorted and compared, usually applied to how text data is sorted in different languages for the purpose of indexing text data and for making comparisons between text values. Different languages have different character sets and ordering.

Right-click the column and select Properties. If the collation property is empty, the column is not a character data type.

A collation specifies the bit patterns that represent each character in a dataset. Collations also determine the rules that sort and compare data. SQL Server supports storing objects that have different collations in a single database.
Collations in SQL Server provide sorting rules, case, and accent sensitivity properties for your data. Collations that are used with character data types, such as char and varchar, dictate the code page and corresponding characters that can be represented for that data type.
