When is it useful to collate? Collation is used in when printing multiple copies of a document that has multiple pages that need to be kept in order. Basically, your finished printing project will be comprised of multiple printed clones of your original multi-page document.
In printing lingo, collate is often used to mean collate copies. That means that instead of printing individual papers, the printer accumulates these documents together to create a complete set. The next time you are printing a document, check out the print preview page.
Printing with multiple pages sorted into one complete set ( Open the file to be printed. Click [Print] from the [File] menu. Click [Preferences]. Select the [Job Options] tab. Input the number of copies in [Copies], and check [Collate]. Specify other settings as necessary, and click [OK].
Collating documents creates consistency, for example, if you have a document that is five pages long and you wanted to print multiple copies, collating enables it to print pages 1,2,3,4 and 5 in the correct order and then repeat this again if you need more than one copy.
If you want each packet to print in the same order, collated printing would be your best bet. This way, collated printing would print pages one through five of the first packet before moving on to the second packet and so on. If something is uncollated, it means its compiled randomly or in an unspecified order.
Collate printing means printing a complete set of pages 1 to 100 before proceeding to print the next 19 sets of pages 1 to 100. Uncollated printing means printing 20 copies of the first page, then printing 20 copies of second page, etc.
If you need 10 copies of an 8-page booklet, choosing to print collated will give you the 10 copies with the 8 pages already in order and ready to go. Alternately, printing uncollated would mean the opposite. Printing this same document uncollated will print the first page 10 times, the second page 10 times, and so on.
When should collate printing be used? Collate printing should be used anytime when you need a number of copies of a multi-page document that is meant to be read sequentially. The more pages in the document and the more copies you need, the more time you can save through collated printing.
