It depends on whether the stain has dried or not. If it is dry, very carefully dab water onto the paper and slowly peel it off. If it is still wet, use tweezers or a spoon to take it off, then place the paper on or under a surface giving cold air. Warm or hot air can cause the paper to tear or wrinkle.
Some methods of surface-cleaning Brush. A clean, soft brush will remove loose dirt and debris from documents. Rubber sponge. Vulcanized natural rubber sponges can be very useful when cleaning paper. Plastic erasers.
Vulcanized natural rubber sponges can be very useful when cleaning paper. Sponges are more effective than brushes, but have greater potential for damage. They are not as effective or abrasive as plastic erasers. Suitable sponges are available from several archival supply companies.
Document cleaning powder can help lift surface dust, dirt and grime from documents, as well as remove oil left from fingerprints. This type of powder is very soft and free of grit. It can be applied to a pad or purchased in a pad form. You would then rub it gently across the surface of the document to clean it.
The best way is to use a mixture of warm water and soap. Gently apply this solution using a cloth onto the affected area until the dirt lifts off.
Small, localized deposits of dirt may be reduced by gentle rubbing with a surface cleaning sponge or a piece of a vinyl block eraser. When using the latter, cut the eraser into a wedge, pencil-point, or whatever will result in the best cleaning shape for this piece.
Using a cleaning solution: A mild cleaning solution, such as a mixture of water and white vinegar, can be used to remove stains and yellowing from white paper. Be sure to test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the paper before using it on the entire document.
Water is used to remove stains due to acidity or discoloration of the paper. Bleach, commonly hydrogen peroxide, is used on rust, mold or brown spots. They can be used by dipping the entire image in a bath or applying as a type of poultice to the affected area.
